Ron is a talented and amazing pianist. He is very insightful about his students’ abilities, and his enthusiastic encouragement has helped me to better understand the structure of the music that I wish to learn and play.

Cowichan Valley Piano Lessons

My goal is to enable confident, competent, and independent musician/pianists according to their personal dreams and aspirations leading to a treasured lifetime hobby or perhaps even a profession! These may take the form of playing purely for enjoyment, preparing for exams, music festivals, recitals, and university entrance auditions in a relaxed, fun and inspired lesson environment free from all forms of intimidation. I encourage students to regard the ability to play music as an honour and a privilege as opposed a duty which must be fulfilled in order to avoid negative consequences. I believe that authentic discipline arises from the love of the art.

Teaching Style

At its core, I base my teaching style on the premise and conviction that the “Universal Creative Intelligence” (whatever name it goes by) exists in all and everyone.
I do my best to emulate some of the world’s greatest teachers who have declared their purpose to be to “Make themselves redundant.” That is to enable, empower students to act confidently and independently of the teacher. Regardless of what level of achievement one aspires to, getting there will involve practice. Practicing is self-teaching. Therefore, the student must take on the role of the teacher when practising on their own. They must have a clear idea of what they wish to accomplish, observe attentively, diagnose the nature of challenges, and come up with creative and practical solutions.
The ability to self-teach rests upon a thorough understanding of the simple, easily understood, easily applied foundation principles which govern the various aspects of pianism, musicianship, and artistry. I am passionate about sharing these principles with students and empowering them to use them to maximum effect and in their own way as the unique individuals they are. This passion arises from sixty years of ongoing personal development as a pianist and musician as well as forty years of teaching experience. This experience has revealed that, of the many potential reasons for the extremely high incidence of people giving up on their piano adventure, often after years of lessons, effort and expenditure, one of the most significant is frustration due to lack of progress. Playing the piano has ceased to be a satisfying pursuit. Tragically, many such people regard this as a personal failure thinking they were not sufficiently intelligent, talented, motivated, disciplined, etc, when in fact, in so many cases, the lack of satisfying progress was due to the lack of foundation knowledge and skill of the sort that facilitates on going and unlimited development.
A moment’s reflection upon human achievement reveals, that once foundation concepts are firmly established, development becomes rapid and even exponential in nature. For example, for millennia, humankind had dreamt of flying like the birds. Finally, in the early 20th century, the Wright Brothers discovered the foundation principles of sustained flight. The first attempt lasted only seconds, the aircraft getting just a few feet off the ground yet a few short decades later, flights to the edge of space at multiple times the speed of sound were a matter of routine!

One To One

Ron always knows how to help me make substantial (and, often, instantaneous!) progress with whatever I am trying to learn or play. In every lesson he has something to tell me or show me that I have not heard or seen in my previous music education.
I find I am learning my pieces faster, practicing more efficiently, and especially having more fun! I look forward to each lesson and can hardly wait to get back to my piano afterwards.

Classically Trained

At age 13, Ron began many years of study at the Victoria Conservatory of Music with Robin Wood, a world class pianist and an excellent, kind and generous teacher.
In 1982, he graduated at the head of his class from the Conservatory’s intensive 2-year piano teacher training program and was awarded an associate degree (AVCM) as well as a position on the piano faculty.
“Working with Ron has been a wonderful experience. ”
